Advocates for the blind are concerned about the new technology and how it might effect visually-impaired individuals as they walk through the streets. Nissan is concerned as well, so its new 2011 Nissan Leaf EV offers a creative solution: an  artificial noises emitted while driving.

A ringing bell is sounded when the vehicle is backing up and a jet-like sound is sounded when moving forward. The sounds measure at 2.5 kHz at the high end of the spectrum to 600 Hz at the bottom which come from a synthesizer under the hood.  Passengers are secluded from the sound within the cockpit by insulating layers thanks to the help of the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology and Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Even though there are no laws mandating these devices in electric vehicles, but Nissan wanted to be proactive and help the blind community.   The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and legislators in Congress are currently working on legislation which would mandate noisemakers in electric vehicles. Reservations for the LEAF began on April 20 for the 115,000 people who pre-registered on the Nissan website. Reservations, which require a fully-refundable $99 fee, will be open to the general public on May 15.

“Early interest in the Nissan LEAF has been highly encouraging,” said Brian Carolin, senior vice president, sales and marketing, NNA. “People from across the country have raised their hands to be among the first to drive home a Nissan LEAF. Consumers are pledging broad support for the first affordable electric vehicle for the mass market.”

The Nissan LEAF is a truly revolutionary vehicle. Unlike conventional cars or even hybrids, it runs solely on a lithium-ion battery pack. It is 100% electric, using no gasoline and releasing zero emissions into the air. The LEAF also features regenerative brakes, a feature that recharges the car’s batteries while coasting or braking.  Energy otherwise lost or wasted will now help drivers drive even further in their Nissan LEAF.

Beyond its numerous environmental benefits, the Nissan LEAF offers drivers considerable savings, both in refueling and at tax time. At $3.50 per gallon, a car that gets 25 miles per gallon has a fuel cost of 14 cents per mile. At $0.23 per kilowatt-hour, the Nissan LEAF has a fuel cost of 5 cents per mile. The LEAF is also fully eligible for a $7500 federal tax credit. Additionally, there are a number of state and local incentives to offset costs for owning and charging a Nissan LEAF. For example, a $5,000 statewide tax rebate is offered in California as are a $5,000 tax credit in Georgia and a $1,500 tax credit in Oregon. Carpool-lane access will also be given in some states, including California.

April 20 also marked the launch of a new website on NissanUSA.com that will be the official source of up-to-date information on the Nissan LEAF.
